The Story of Charisma

The Story Of Charisma Charisma is a dance company whose members focus on the union of body, mind, and spirit when they dance. Charisma uses dance movement to speak to the soul. Inspired by their inner spirits, the dancers use motion as the connection to give those spirits a collective voice. The goal of Charisma is to be more than a dance company by being a force to promote growth and spiritual awakening. Daina Cockrell had a vision of creating Charisma when she was twelve years old. She used her own dance experiences as a catalyst to understand herself and to help herself grow at a deeper spiritual level. She wanted her choreography to flow from her soul and to present extraordinary dance performances as a ministry that would lead her audience to a higher plane. She felt that her vision would attract others to join in her endeavors. In 2001, Charisma debuted its first non-professional performance, “Awakenings.” The dancers in “Awakenings” were children and adults trained by Daina. They shared the spotlight with Daina and her dance partner, Colin McClung. Following the 2001 season, Mr. McClung’s career took him to Alaska and new opportunities. Daina began to look for a new partner. Rodney Williams joined the troupe later that year. As Rodney and Daina choreographed together, they felt they were guided by charismatic sources to produce the work that enthralled their audiences. From this unique collaboration came the dance company’s name, Charisma. In the prodution of “One Spirit Many Voices” Charisma started to attract other like minded charismatic dancers to join them in their mission.

Charisma Dance Theatre is a Richmond-based professional dance company that focuses on raising the consciousness of the new millennium to a higher level of spiritual growth through cutting edge works that challenge traditional boundaries. Presenting a spectrum of works that are multicultural and intergenerational as well as socially and visually appealing to all audiences, Charisma embodies exceptional artistry and a profound sense of spirituality that evokes an energy of healing in the audience, touching their souls. Charisma Dance Theatre is dedicated to the unity of all mankind. Charisma is an exhilarating and soul-stirring force of lightworkers whose mission is to help shift the focus from fear to love in the new millennium. As members of Charisma, we are here to motivate our audience. We embrace spiritual growth as our common bond. We come from many different backgrounds and offer a variety of different talents which often results in a variety of different surprises. Charisma celebrates messages of the heart through the combination of dance, voice, art, and music, which results in a greater impact for the audience because all of the senses are involved. Charisma celebrates metaphysical themes which educate and entertain, providing the community with affordable dance performances and related experiences. Charisma dancers offer not only a dance performance but an experience for the soul that inspires, aligns, and energizes audiences of all ages, cultures, religions. Committed to unity, Charisma seeks to discover the common bond that connects us all. Charisma is a non-profit corporation, originally founded by Kay Hearton and spearheaded by Daina Cockrell for the last 10 years, that brings together like-minded artists with this common goal: To create a very diverse repertoire of works that are contemporary and spiritual, using modern ballet, rhythm, blues, body sculpture, African music and movement, and structures to produce captivating images.
